With Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating 182-metre-tall statue of India’s ‘Iron Man’ Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat on Wednesday, India not only gifted the word its tallest statue but also got its much awaited ‘Statue of Unity’, a symbol of National Integration and Pride.

Prime Minister Modi said ‘Statue of Unity’ would be a symbol of unity of hearts and India’s geographical unity.

Finally, the ‘Statue of Unity’ came as real tribute to Patel, an unsung hero of India’s freedom movement, who was instrumental in merger of more than 560 princely states with India after country’s partition.

It was believed that India had not yet paid the debt it owed to its ‘Visionary Diplomat’ who united the country with his strategic wisdom. However, with ‘Statue of Unity’ and celebrating Patel’s Birth Anniversary as Rashtriya Ekta Divas (National Unity Day), India have paid homage to its real engineer.
Apart from being a farmer leader, a freedom fighter, a visionary politician, a skilled diplomat, Patel is also remembered as an unprecedented administrator.

Balraj Krishna, a veteran former journalist, has mentioned in his book “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel India’s Iron Man” that common talk among the members of the Indian Civil Service post independence used to be: “If the dead body of Sardar Patel were stuffed and placed on a chair, he could rule.”

Patel’s face commanded such obedience.

Princes, politicians and administrators called upon him with certain trepidation, fearing the scorn of his eyes; much worse the rap of his caustic tongue. In national matters, Patel was “harder that steel” but “softer than flower” in personal and private relations. Patel never walked a “fallen” enemy, the book reads further.

Meanwhile, the “Statue of Unity” unveiled by Prime Minister Modi at Kevadiya in Gujarat is constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2989 Crore.

"Statue of Unity" is 177 feet higher than China's Spring Temple Buddha, which was the tallest statue till now. Further, it is twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty in New York.
Haryana government has also announced to set up a “State Bhawan” at ‘Ek Bharat Shrehstha Bharat Complex’ near Statue of Unity to facilitate tourists from the state.
